Balearic Beats Volume 43: Chipmusic Sounds of Summer

Kittenrock and Chippanze present: Balearic Beats vol 43 – Chipmusic sounds of summer.

14 tracks of the types of things you might hear on an Ibiza Chillout compilation CD that your mum might buy from a supermarket, but made using old computers, consoles and trackers.

Fresh tracks from Yerzmyey, Joss Manley, Hypnodrive, Comptroller, Cheapshot, Pulselooper, irrlicht project, tmt, Mr. Spastic, GOTO80, Jellica, Mister Beep, Rico Zerone and Vince Kaichan (and a last minute secret track that didn’t make the deadline!).

Captive Portal – Laughing Turkeys EP December 2015 – KR073

The second track had me cracking up with some crazy frog feelings and then there is a funky one and then a weird one and its xhrist mas as well. Also includes original tracker files.

░▒▓ – ≡/∩

░▒▓ aka 176177178 put out a new release of pops and crackles which he has described as lofi glitchy field recordings. ░▒▓ is probably JM aka Joss Manley aka Josstintimberlake and this is probably not 8bit music.

tMt- Regress

Interesting Game Boy/chipmusic releases seem quite few and far between these days. Sure, some kids released some technically spectacular EDM/Trance/Bassmicrogenre stuff but they didn’t seem to contain much emotion beyond party hard dudes and they leave me feeling a little cold.

Then I was just cruising the chipmusic.org website and saw that tMt (the mist toggles) had released a new little something on Chippanze. Full of bass, atmospheric textures, moody feelings and freaky percussion.

Apparently it’s all about interactions between sounds, waves, ear drums, modulations and adaptations and it aims at physical reactions by attentive listeners.

Poke-1,170 – Virtigo

Considering it’s an electronic form of music, there are still a lot of types of modern electronic music that remain fairly unexplored in a chipmusic way. Sure, there are a few people making popular EDM style stuff but there are very few making freaky techno, electro, acid and other genres I suppose you might bundle under unlikeable terms like IDM, Braindance or electronica.

This new MSX release from Amiga VJ Poke-1,170 on 8bitpeoples fits into this category perfectly with its crisp electro beats, spooky droning pads and rumbling FM bass. Perfect 90s nostalgia that sounds like early Autechre and Drexciya, which is a good thing.

You can download it for free at 8bitpeoples.com

8GB – World of Bomi

Can you measure how chip something is? People don’t even seem to be able to agree on what chip music is anyway, so how can you begin to measure something when you dont even know what you are measuring? Maybe someone could do some graphs with data or something.

I don’t know but 8GB can because this is 85/90% with Protracker 2.3 on Amiga. It is maybe a bit vague for me but given the circumstances, what can you do?

Well whatever, this is two great tracks of booty shaking Amiga techno with another techno but maybe a bit more melodic remix from Tom Woxom and a skweee remix from DKSTR.

Another great little something for people who don’t like chipmusic that sounds like unicorns ejaculating rainbows into your ears.

Sea64 – Floating High

As far as I can tell more and more people seem to be more interested in self releasing on Bandcamp and places like that than netlabels these days. So I decided that I should try and aggregate chipmusic releases that summon the spirit of Kittenrock here with a small review.

Anyway, first up is Floating High by Sea64, a squelchy little number that seems to pretty much replace the old 303 with a C64 with delightful results. Apparently it is Seapunk and I know that all the kids are down with that because someone that tells Rihanna what to do thinks it is cool.

Most Seapunk just seems to sound a bit like 90s dance music to me but I guess that doesn’t matter much as there was lots of great dance music in the 90s.
